Alumni Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Islam Indonesia have started her traveling since 2014. After graduating from college, she began to find her desire to be a solo female travelers to many countries in the world.
Winny, as the owner of Blog and Instagram Nny Journey, also shared her inspirational stories to Avoskin. Let’s read about our special Q & A with Nny Journey!
Hi, Winny. Can you tell us about your beginnings as a solo traveler?
I loved traveling since I was in school. My dream is to travel to many countries in the world realized in 2014. After I graduated from college in Yogyakarta, I worked as an architect in a multinational company in Jakarta.
Then I resigned from my job, and continue my online business that I’ve been built on 2011. That is the time I became a traveler, a business woman, and as well as a freelancer for several project specific architecture. With this type of job, I think I can free to go travel anywhere but still making money from my business.
It is amazing. Then, why did you choose the names Nny Journey?
Nny taken from my real name, Winny, which combined with the word “journey” to make it more memorable. I think it can represent the real me and what I love as a traveler.
How many countries that you had been visited? And which one is your favorite?
I officially visited 20 countries. My favorite: Myanmar, Turkey, and Netherlands.
How did you feel when the first time you visited abroad?
More than happy! At that time I visited Singapore and Malaysia.
What is the most interesting experience of all the traveling you have done?
There are so many interesting experience. A time in Thailand, I have a free taxi ride because the taxi driver would not be paid. I think he was pity to see me traveling alone, hahaha.
Then in Turkey, when visiting the Topkapi Palace. I could see all the relics of the Prophet Muhammad along with his companions. The most amazing for me, was seeing the strands of the beard of the Prophet Muhammad.
How about the worst experience?
Maybe when I’m in Myanmar. It was the peak of summer season. I want to go from Mandalay to Bagan with economic train. The train actually should be departured at 9 pm, but it had arrived at 3 am.
To waiting for along time, I have to sleep in the train station overhang, joined with local residents. When the train already boarded, the air is very hot. There is no air conditioner or fan on the train. The wind from the open window did not help at all, it adds a sense of heat. The temperature at that time is 41 degrees Celcius.
In 7 am, in the middle og the trip, the train engine suddenly broken. In the end, me and the other passengers had to wait for 6 hours until the train engine had been successfully fixed. Finally, I arrived in Bagan at 4 pm. The total is 12 hours for the trip! But it does not make me give up to travel with train. In fact, I most like to travel by train. Anywhere.
It was amazing trip, and you faced it alone. Then, how you prepare the budget for traveling?
I set aside my income. It could say, 70% of my budget was allocated for traveling. I just returned from six months traveling around Asia. Starting from Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Philipines, Malaysia and Singapore.
My traveling style is backpacker, of course, with a limited budget. Choose a cheap hostel but comfortable and safe. Always use public transport. Choosing street food rather than restaurant. If it possible, I also walk. It really minimize the living cost during traveling.
I also only carry one large backpack size 50 L and 1 small backpack for important objects such as passports, wallet, mobile phones, camera, and others. So I did not need air baggage fees, and the tickets will be cheaper. My motto is, pack less, travel more.
Very inspiring. So, according to you, what is the most positive things that you can feel as a benefit of traveling around the world?
Of course, I became more independent, more courageous, and more able to compromise than before.
I could be more open to other people, learn simple life, and can solve problems properly.
Surely, I can meet new friends from different countries, which makes my English ability increased. Learning about the different cultures in every country I had been visited also make my knowledge increases, as well as my network is more extensive.
But actually, did you feeling fear or worried when being a solo traveler? Especially you are a woman.
Absolutely. Moreover, at the beginning I decided to become a solo traveler. However, after a couple times to go abroad alone, the fear was long gone. It seemed to be trained with self experience. I always prepare the next trip better.
“In conclusion, the fear that must be resisted. If we let it stand, the feeling will always exist in ourselves and we will never start.”
Convinced me, being a solo traveler was never really alone. We are going to meet a lot of people, on the street, at the hostel, at airports, in restaurants, and so on.
Even at several times I met Indonesian tourist who eventually became my friends on the trip.
Do you have any special tips, for Sahabat AVO who will traveling alone to abroad?
The completeness of the document must be considered. Such as your passport, visa (if the country you are visiting requires a visa), the ticket price that suits your budget. I usually buy the tickets from long ago, so the price is cheaper. Often, I can also choose the ticket promo.
“In order to keep travel documents safe, in addition to bringing original, you should also bring the copies and soft copies.”
Keep it safe on your gadget or your own email. It very useful at any time if you needed.
Do not forget, to plan your trip properly. Where is the city that you would be visited, where you would stay, and others. But usually, for someone who already often traveling alone, itinerary is not a priority because they prefer to explore new places spontaneously.
Likewise the medicine, you should always be ready even though you are not need it. Cold medicine, fever, plaster, masks, and others.
For the finance tips, you can bring the dollars (USD) which can later be exchanged into local currency when you arrived. You can also withdraw cash at an ATM machine with your debit card. Make sure your debit card have a VISA or Mastercard logo.
Don’t forget to ask for the blessings of your parents before going anywhere. Avoid visiting deserted places at night. Do not easily believe strangers! Keep always yourself and your belongings.
Most importantly, start it with the heart and positive thinking. God willing all safe.
Perfect tips! It can be used as a reference for Sahabat AVO who will traveling to abroad. Anyway, how do you take care of your skin when traveling?
I do not always use makeup everyday, except in some special events. When traveling, I usually use a skin moisturizer and sunblock to protect my skin from the sun.
What are the beauty products that must be taken wherever you go?
The mandatory beauty products are day cream, night cream, sun block, body lotion, deodorant, perfume, and toiletries.
You are a brave woman. What is the definition of a natural beauty for you?
For me, natural beauty is not always about physically and bright skin. Beauty is when you can present yourself with a good attitude and actions. I have always believed that inner beauty is more lasting than physical beauty. Although we can not ignore the physical prefection which God has given to us.

Always miling. Lots of good things comes from smiling. There are many people who like me because I was smiling. You can smile anytime because smile is worship. Maintain and take care of the outside is mandatory, while not excessive and compatible with us.
How do you spread a positive inspiration to those around you, especially for the new people you meet on the journey?
